The Periodic Table

The periodic table arranges all the known elements in order of atomic number. This unit covers how it is organised into groups and periods, and how position links to an element's properties.

Slide 1 / 4

How it is arranged

  • Elements are placed in order of increasing atomic number (number of protons).
  • Vertical columns are called groups and horizontal rows are called periods.
  • Metals are found on the left and centre, non-metals on the right.
  • Elements with similar properties line up in the same group.
