Artificial intelligence is about building computer systems that can carry out tasks that would normally need human intelligence. This lesson explains what AI is, the characteristics of an AI system, the idea of narrow and general AI, and looks at common examples along with the benefits and risks.

What artificial intelligence is
Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence by computer systems so they can perform tasks that would normally need a person.
AI systems try to mimic human abilities such as making decisions, recognising patterns, understanding language and solving problems.
AI is used in everyday tools such as voice assistants, recommendation systems and route planners that adapt to conditions.
AI does not mean a computer is truly conscious, it means the system can process data and act in ways that appear intelligent.
