Keeping Data Safe

For every cyber security threat there are protection methods that reduce the risk. This lesson covers the main ways of keeping data safe, from firewalls and encryption to authentication and access levels, and helps you match the right protection to each threat.

  • Access levels give different users different rights, so a person can only read or change the data their role allows.
  • Authentication checks that a user is who they claim to be, most commonly using a password that only they should know.
  • Biometrics use a physical feature such as a fingerprint or face, which is hard to copy or share, to confirm identity.
  • Two-step verification adds a second check, such as a code sent to a phone, so a stolen password alone is not enough to log in.
