Software is split into two families: system software that runs and manages the computer, and application software that helps the user complete a task. In this lesson you will learn the difference between them, see clear examples of each, and understand the jobs an operating system does behind the scenes.

Two families of software
System software is the set of programs that control and run the computer and provide a platform on which other software can operate.
Application software is the set of programs that let a user carry out a specific task, such as writing a document or editing a photo.
The operating system, device drivers, utility programs and translators are all examples of system software.
Word processors, spreadsheets, web browsers, databases and photo editors are all examples of application software.
