Algebra uses letters to stand for numbers so we can write and solve general rules. This unit covers collecting like terms, expanding brackets, solving equations and the laws of indices.

Terms and like terms
A term is a single number, letter or number times letter, such as 3x.
Like terms use the same letter to the same power, such as 2x and 5x.
You can add or subtract like terms, so 2x plus 5x makes 7x.
You cannot combine unlike terms such as 3x and 3y.
Check you've got it
0/4
1. Simplify 5x + 3x - 2x.
2. Expand 3(2x + 4).
3. Solve 2x + 3 = 11.
4. Simplify x to the power 4 times x to the power 3.
