Health, Fitness and Components of Fitness

Health and fitness are related but not the same. This unit defines health, fitness and well-being, then works through the components of physical fitness such as cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, speed, power, agility, balance, coordination and reaction time, including how each one is used in sport and how it can be measured with a recognised fitness test.

Health, fitness and well-being

  • Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not just the absence of illness.
  • Fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment or of a physical activity.
  • Well-being covers feeling good and functioning well physically, mentally and socially.
  • You can be fit but unhealthy (for example, fit but injured or ill), which is why the two are separate ideas.
