Skeletal and Muscular Systems

Your bones give the body a frame, protect vital organs and work with muscles to produce movement. In this unit you learn the functions of the skeleton, the main types of joint and the movements they allow, the major muscles, and how muscles work in antagonistic pairs to move a limb and then move it back.

Slide 1 / 4

Functions of the skeleton

  • Support: gives the body its shape and holds it upright.
  • Protection: the cranium protects the brain, the ribs protect the heart and lungs.
  • Movement: bones act as levers that muscles pull on at joints.
  • Blood cell production happens in the bone marrow of long bones.
